Al Gets His Body Back Funny
Hiromu Arakawa's hit manga series Fullmetal Alchemist was adapted into a 2003 anime, then again into the 2009 anime Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, not to mention two animated movies and a live-action one. In all versions, the brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric are the stars, and sometimes, it seems that Alphonse takes a back seat to Edward.
But Alphonse is 100% just as worthy of being the main character as Edward is, and he is plenty popular among the fans. He and Edward both made the grievous mistake of trying to resurrect their deceased mother via alchemy, and Alphonse lost his entire body as the price. Edward's quick thinking bound his soul to armor, and now, he's a metal giant. What else should we know about the younger Elric brother?
10 His Italian Inspiration
Alphonse Elric, as viewers will soon see, is a human soul bound to a hulking suit of armor. More than a few characters (including villains) are shocked to find out that no one is inside. But this story has been told before.
It's likely that author Hiromu Arakawa drew inspiration from Italo Calvino's story The Nonexistent Knight, in which a knight is just an empty suit of armor who goes around enforcing the chivalric code. Fortunately, he's a nice guy, and not a monster.
9 He's Smooth With Women
Mei Chang soon developed a huge crush on the idea of Alphonse Elric, and while this one-sided relationship didn't amount to anything, it can be said that Alphonse is much nicer to women and girls than Edward is.
Not that Edward is a total jerk to them, but Alphonse is more savvy and gentle in conversation, and he gets along with them better overall. Meanwhile, in bonus comics, it is shown that Alphonse urgently wants a girlfriend.
8 He Underestimated Edward's Guilt
Both Edward and Alphonse blamed themselves (but not each other) for the disaster of trying to revive their mother, and Alphonse blamed himself for what happened. But he was so preoccupied with that, he didn't realize that Ed blamed himself, too.
This came to a head early on, when Al (inspired by Barry the Chopper) accused Ed of creating him as an artificial brother. Winry, who was in tears, berated Al and reminded him that Edward was staggering under the weight of guilt. So, Al went to make things up with Ed, and the problem was cleared up.
7 His Stunted Mental Progress
No, this isn't to say that Alphonse is stupid! Far from it; he's a brilliant kid with a scientific mind similar to Edward's. However, he was ten years old when the taboo alchemy experiment took place, and the soul of a ten-year-old boy is what was imprinted on that armor.
So, Alphonse's mentality hit the pause button, and now, at age 14, he still acts as though he was ten, and this makes him endearing to other characters and the viewer alike. He's got a childlike innocence that's tough to dislike.
6 He's Apologetic
Alphonse is great with the ladies, but speaking more broadly, he speaks gently to everyone. Unlike his hotheaded and aggressive brother, Alphonse is not confrontational at all, and things get awkward when Ed starts bullying people.
Al is the type of guy to keep the peace, and he will often apologize to Edward's latest victim even while Ed is going off at them. At least one of the Elric brothers has some tact; enough, in fact, to cover both of them.
5 He Loves Cats
Alphonse is certainly a gentle giant, and he seems to have a long-standing desire to have his own pet. More than once, Edward wonders why Alphonse suddenly stopped in the middle of their journey... and then he finds out!
Each time, Alphonse finds another stray cat to adopt, and he just can't resist, even when Edward objects. He's known to carry cats in his armor, and in bonus comics, he stores quite a few in there at once.
4 He Misses Food Most Of All
There are some benefits to being in an armored body, such as having no risk of starving, drowning, or getting a heart attack or stroke. But Alphonse is hardly having a vacation in there, and he misses many aspects of being human.
Most of all, he wants to taste food again, and in particular, he wants to taste Winry's cooking, such as her excellent apple pies. In fact, Winry is practicing her baking so when Al gets his body back, he'll be in for a real treat.
3 He Doesn't Like Being Big
That's what Alphonse used to look like, and unsurprisingly, he identifies much more with this version of himself than his hulking metal body. He's often mistaken for the Fullmetal Alchemist due to his huge metal body, but that's not who he is.
Not only is that inaccurate, but Alphonse feels bad that people see him only as a giant. He actually gets happy when people treat him like a young boy, since that is indeed what he is on the inside.
2 He Likes Xing Stuff
Alphonse is fascinated by the Xingese art of alkahestry, which is based on remote transmutation that can heal injuries and aid the sick. While Olivier Armstrong wanted to weaponize it somehow, Alphonse appreciated it for what it is.
In some versions of the story, Alphonse travels to Xing to learn more, and until then, he got along well with May and her panda. In fact, Al mistook the panda for a cat and thus tried to adopt it, though it soon returned to its real owner.
1 He Gets Along With Hohenheim
Both Elric brothers were distraught when Van Hohenheim, their father, left the family and their mother died a few years after that. But while Edward holds a bitter grudge over it, Alphonse has a different perspective.
For one thing, Al is more compassionate and patient anyway, and when Hohenheim explained his history with Xerxes and Father, Alphonse sympathized with him. Both of them view themselves as monsters, after all, with Hohenheim being an immortal Philosopher's Stone and Alphonse being a soul in a metal suit.
